800x600 (470 Kb) many laptops and desktops
1024x768 (770 Kb) usually only on 17" monitors and larger 

Once you have opened up the file, right click on the photograph and click "Save picture as"
Then select either c:\windows\ or c:\windowsnt\ for the directory in which to place it, and click "Save"

The most common location for a desktop graphic is c:\windows\ or c:\windowsnt\.  Just download the file and place it in that subdirectory.  If you're running WindowsMe or WindowsXP, it should be a similar location.  Check your help files to be sure.
