Godly Play

Children's Sunday school starts at 9 a.m. on Sunday mornings.  We are currently using Jerome Berryman’s Godly Play curriculum.  Children 3 years old through 5th grade are encouraged to attend.

Godly Play is an interactive, 3-dimensional, hands-on way children and adults can experience God’s stories.  This is a Montessori storytelling method of teaching our children the sacred stories, parables, and our other important stories.

Children are greeted at the door by our “doorkeeper.”  Children are then welcomed individually by the storyteller and are invited to sit on the floor.  When everyone has joined the circle the storyteller locates the story for the morning and presents it.  After the story, the children are invited into a time of “wondering” so that they can begin to interact with the story, with God, and with what God wants them to hear.  The time of “wondering” leads to an opportunity for the children to respond in some creative way.  Godly Play concludes with “a feast.”  The feast consists of simple foods (water and goldfish), prayer, and community.  In this way we mirror what is happening in the children’s chapel and in the big sanctuary.  We hear the word, respond, and feast.

The Godly Play room is designed to be child friendly.  Everything is at the children’s height and everything is touchable.

Godly Play is traditionally over at 10am but occasionally is extended through the first part of service to give the children more time for their work.

Children’s Chapel

Children’s Chapel begins at 10am.  Chapel is especially designed for Godly Play age children.

Children’s Chapel is an inviting way to worship God and learn why we do the things we do.  We use a simplified order of liturgy that mirrors the first part of the regular service.  It includes music, a confession and absolution, prayers of the people, the Gospel, and an interactive “sermon.”  Children serve in varying roles in chapel.  Each week there is an acolyte, a crucifier, two ushers, one lay reader, and a mistral (he/she starts and stops the CDs).  Once a month two children are asked to present the food pantry offerings in “big church.”

Children process into “big church” following their crucifer before the passing of the peace.  They are invited to sit with their parents for the remainder of service.  The two ushers present the children’s offering with the adult usher in “big church.”

Children’s Chapel is offered even when there is no Sunday school.

Children's Fun

Once a month from September to May a children's program is offered outside of Sunday morning.  This is primarily a time for fellowship and community for the children.  Some of the things we have done include playing games, coloring Easter eggs and hearing the Easter egg story, making cookies for the bishop's visit, a birthday party honoring Jesus, painting the sun catchers that are hanging in the children's chapel, and the end of year picnic.  And, of course, we have LOTS OF FUN!!

Nursery

Christ Church presently does not staff a nursery.
